Variety has reported that the new live-action film based on the Mortal Kombat game franchise is set to begin pre-production this month in Australia. James Wan will be producing the film at New Line Cinema. The news was confirmed by Steven Marshall, premier of South Australia.

Simon McQuoid will be making his directorial debut on the project and Greg Russo is set to write the screenplay.

Marshall had this to say about the project.

“’Mortal Kombat’ will be the largest film production in South Australia’s history and highlights the importance of engaging with the world’s major production houses,” said Marshall. “The state government’s investment in ‘Mortal Kombat’ will enhance the scope and reach of our production and post production capabilities, bringing the promise of fantastic new jobs for the local film industry.”
