Mobile Suit Gundam the Origin MSD: Cucuruz Doan’s Island Manga Ends

The July issue of Kadokawa’s Gundam Ace Magazine recently published the final chapter of Junji Ōno’s Mobile Suit Gundam The Origin MSD: Cucuruz Doan’s Island. The manga is a spin-off of Yoshikazu Yasuhiko’s Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin manga, a series that re-imagines the original Mobile Suit Gundam anime series. However, Ōno’s spin-off directly focuses on retelling the story of Cucuruz Doan, a character from the fifteenth episode of the original anime series.

Now, not all western fans may be aware of the character as the fifteenth episode was cut from international distribution due to series creator, Yoshiyuki Tomino, being displeased by the various animation errors it contained. However, the episode is still possible to be seen through other outlets like official Japanese releases, and through fansubs. In the episode, the titular character is a former Zeon pilot who abandoned the army after growing tired of the senseless killing, and have orphaned several children he currently raises as his own. Yet, his new life as the guardian of the kids could come to end when Amuro and the White Base appear on his isolated island.

Junji Ōno’s Mobile Suit Gundam The Origin MSD: Cucuruz Doan’s Island debut in Gundam Ace in May 2016. The series currently spans four volumes, with the fourth volume having released last November. Yet, with the series concluding, Kadokawa intends to release the fifth volume in August.
