Star Wars The Phantom Menace Prequel Comic Storyline Announced – The Origins of Yoda

For many years, fans of Star Wars have wondered about the origins of Jedi Master Yoda.  Many have known him as one of the strongest Jedi to ever live, however not much was known about his origins and the events that led him to become what he was.   Thanks to a new storyline that will debut in issue 26 of the ongoing Star Wars comics by Marvel his origins will soon be revealed.

An interview with Jason Aaaron has recently been posted to the official Star Wars website.  Jason Aaaron is the current writer for several of new Star Wars comics, but will also be working on the Yoda storyline for the ongoing series.  The comic will also introduce a new comic artist, Salvador Larroc, who was known to previously work on X-Men and other Marvel comic titles.

Some of the highlights of the interview include:

StarWars.com: The general idea of the arc is that Luke is reading Obi-Wan’s journals and he’s reading about a legendary Jedi Master, but he doesn’t know that he’s reading about Yoda. Where did the idea come from to tell this story?

Jason Aaron: Well, you know, we’ve been doing different issues between the arcs, focusing on Obi-Wan. I’ve really liked doing those. They’ve gotten a nice response from fans, people seem like they’ve really enjoyed those. So we’ve liked jumping around to different parts of the timeline like that, and [telling] a story that would connect tangentially, or just in terms of the overall theme but not necessarily vital to our ongoing plot. I kind of wanted to do something like that, but instead of having it be just a standalone issue between the arcs, have it be the actual arc. And of course, I was always trying to figure out a way for us to use Yoda. We’re a bit hamstrung in terms of the time period of our main story, because Yoda’s chilling on Dagobah. So this was kind of the only way we could kill all those birds with one stone — to do one story that connects Luke, Yoda, and Obi-Wan all at the same time, while still taking place in three different time periods.

StarWars.com: I’m guessing it’s pre-Phantom Menace. So is it a young Yoda of 600 years old? [Laughs] How far back are we going?

Jason Aaron: [Laughs] I don’t know if we’ve put a pin in exactly when it takes place. It does take place before Phantom Menace. We do get a brief appearance by Qui-Gon and young Obi-Wan, so that’ll probably help date it.

So there you have it.  In my opinion I think this is going to be amazing and I can’t wait to see how they will explain Jedi Master Yoda’s origins.  Star Wars issue 26 will be released this December so its going to be an interesting read as they continue the story into early next year. The rest of the interview can be read at the link below.
