Thundercats Film Adaptation in the Works

Deadline has reported that Adam Wingard has been hired to direct a Thundercats film adaptation for Warner Bros. According to Deadline, the film was originally being developed by Rideback’s Dan Lin with the help of Vertigo’s Roy Lee. The new script for the film will be written by Wingard alongside Simon Barett. Additionally, it has been reported that this film be a CGI animated film. No other details have been confirmed at this time, so please stay tuned for all updates.

 

For those who are unaware, the film is based on Thundercats property, which was created in 1985. The original series ran from 1985 to 1989 and was produced by Rankin/Bass Animated Entertainment and Leisure Concepts. The franchise also received two reboot series in 2011 and 2020. In addition, the series has also received several comic adaptations and toylines.

 

The original series premise followed a group of cat humanoids that escaped their dying planet called Thundera. While trying to escape the planet, they are followed by the Mutants of Plun-Darr. The Mutants successfully destroy many of their ships in attempt to steal the mystical Sword of Omens. The flagship manages to escape and lands on a planet called Third Earth. On the planet, the remaining forces known as the “Thundercats” must work together to stop the evil Mumm-Ra and the Mutants of Plun-Darr from obtaining the Sword of Omens.
