Usagi Yojimbo Animated Series in the Works

It has recently been reported that an animated series based on Usagi Yojimbo is the works by Gaumont and Dark Horse Entertainment. The series will be produced by Dark Horse Entertainment, James Wan, and Stan Sakai, the creator of Usagi Yojimbo.

Fans of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles should recognize this character through his various cameo appearances, however this will be the first time he will be getting his own animated series.

The CGI series is stated to begin production in 2018 and is currently in the process of searching where it will air.

Nicolas Atlan, president of animation at Gaumont, had this to say about the project.

“Usagi Yojimbo has been much sought after for many years, and we are honored to work with Stan Sakai to translate his multi-generational stories into the first ever TV series,” said Gaumont President of Animation, Nicolas Atlan. “Usagi Yojimbo’s blend of history and mythology, a clever balance between action and comedy, and real-world touchpoints combined with the supernatural, together with the passionate fan base that Stan has already amassed, makes this an incredibly exciting property to develop with our partners Atomic Monster and Dark Horse Entertainment.”

Terry Kalagian, VP of creative animation at Gaumont also had some thoughts about the project.

“It’s a universe comprised of animals, which is a little bit different from other comic worlds,” says Terry Kalagian, VP of creative for animation at Gaumont. “And that appeals to kids, especially when a lot of other superhero IPs focus on grownups. Every child can see themselves as a hero like these animals.”

No other details are confirmed about the project so stay tuned for updates.
