Star Wars Resistance Animated Series Announced

The official Star Wars website has updated with the announcement for the next animated project based on the Star Wars franchise.  The new series will be titled, “Star Wars Resistance,” which is set to premiere on the Disney Channel in the U.S. and on Disney XD worldwide this Fall. Star Wars Resistance is stated to be “anime-inspired” so it will differ from the various animated series based on the franchise.

The new series will feature the adventures of Kazuda Xiono, who is a young pilot recruited by the Resistance in order to spy on the First Order. The series will also feature fan favorites such as Poe Dameron, Captain Phasma, and BB-8. Oscar Isaac and Gwendoline Christie will return to reprise their roles.

Other voice actors attached to the project includes; Christopher Sean, Suzie McGrath, Scott Lawrence, Mryna Velasco, Josh Brener, Donald Faison, Bobby Moynihan, Jim Rash, and Rachel Butera. Currently their roles have not been confirmed at this time.

The production team consists of:

  • Dave Filoni: Original Creator
  • Athena Portillo, Justin Ridge, Brandon Auman: Executive Producers
  • Amy Beth Christenson: Art Director

Dave Filoni had this to say about his new project.

“The idea for Star Wars Resistance came out of my interest in World War II aircraft and fighter pilots” said Filoni. “My grandfather was a pilot and my uncle flew and restored planes, so that’s been a big influence on me. There’s a long history of high-speed racing in Star Wars, and I think we’ve captured that sense of excitement in an anime-inspired style, which is something the entire team has been wanting to do for a long time.”

Marc Buhj, the Progamming and general manager of Disney XD also had some thoughts about the project.

Marc Buhaj, senior vice president, Programming and general manager, Disney XD, said, “Our colleagues at Lucasfilm have created a compelling narrative for an untold moment in the Star Wars galaxy, and we are excited to partner with them again on this new original series. Star Wars Resistance will bring viewers across generations an engaging story with heart, humor and both new and familiar characters.”

Personally I think it is great to see an animated series based on the time period before the Force Awakens. While there is a lot of story revealed within this particular time period in the current comics and books, I think it is great to see more of the story shown in animated form.
