Yesterday, at the FLCL 2 panel at Anime Expo 2016 vice president and producer at Production I.G., Maki Terashima-Furuta announced that the original character designer Yoshiyuki Sadamoto (Neon Genesis Evangelion, .hack franchise, Attack on Titan live-action films) is returning for the sequel. Along with the return of Sadamoto, Terashima-Furuta announced Japanese rock band, The Pillows are also returning to provide music for the series. Another announcement was the addition of Katsuyuki Motohiro (chief director of Psycho-Pass) will supervise the series. Also in attendance was FLCL creator, Kazuya Tsurumako, Haruko’s voice actress Mayumi Shintani, and Adult Swim’s Jason DeMarco.
Back in March, Adult Swim’s Toonami announced that it will co-produce the new FLCL series with Production I.G. which will be a direct sequel to the original. The series will consist of 12 episode, that will be split into two season for late 2017 and early 2018.

In the new season of FLCL, many years have passed since Naota and Haruhara Haruko shared their adventure together. Meanwhile, the war between the two entities known as Medical Mechanica and Fraternity rages across the galaxy. Enter Hidomi, a young teenaged girl who believes there is nothing amazing to expect from her average life, until one day when a new teacher named Haruko arrives at her school. Soon enough, Medical Mechanica is attacking her town and Hidomi discovers a secret within her that could save everyone, a secret that only Haruko can unlock.
But why did Haruko return to Earth? What happened to her Rickenbacker 4001 she left with Naota? And where did the human-type robot ‘Canti’ go?
