Godzilla vs. Gigan 50th Anniversary NEW Gigan Suit Crowdfunding Campaign

Recently, Toho Studios published an announcement on the Godzilla YouTube Channel regarding their upcoming Godzilla vs. Gigan 50th anniversary project. Titled, “Toho & Wakasa Announce Gigan Suit START UP Project!” the video is hosted by veteran kaiju suit designer, Shinichi Wakasa. In the video, Mr. Wakasa informs viewers how he is leading the production team in crafting a new Gigan suit. Whereas, the new suit will be used in the Godzilla Fest 2022 short, similar to last year’s Godzilla vs. Hedorah short. Also, Mr. Wakasa explains how the team wanted an exact replica of the original 1972 suit designed by Nobuyuki Yasumaru. So, this resulted in Toho and Mr. Wakasa, launching a crowdfunding campaign to cover the cost of the suit.

Additionally, this video is to update backers on the project, as it is nearly 50% funded for their goal of ¥15,000,000 JPY ($115,733 USD). However, Mr. Wakasa stresses how there is only 19 days until the campaign ends on May 31st, after having launched on April 1st. Also, Mr. Wakasa explains how backers will have their names included in the credits of the upcoming short. Furthermore, he informs viewers that backers will be offered a new X-Plus figure based on the suit as another reward.

Now, the campaign is through Japan’s crowdfunding service Ubugoe, and we are unsure if international fans can back the project. However, if international fans know how to back this project and can do it, then by all means please do. Whereas, the funding page reassures how a majority of the cost is solely towards the suit, and its accompanying merchandise. Yet, some of the proceeds will go towards compensating Shinichi Wakasa and director, Kazuhiro Nakagawa. Also, the site lists other backer rewards like postcards, pins, clothing and a Blu-Ray release for the short. Nevertheless, this is an amazing project to undertake, and we can only hope that Mr. Wakasa’s team succeeds!
