SONY Interactive Launches Playstation Productions, Adapting Games for Film & Television

Today, Sony Interactive Entertainment launched its new production studio, Playstation Productions, which will adapt its various video games into television productions and feature length films. Asad Qizilbash has appointed to head Playstation Productions, while the chair of Worldwide Studios at SIE, Shawn Layden will oversee productions. In addition, the studio is currently developing their first slate of projects, with them setting up on the Sony Pictures lot in Culver City.

The intent of Playstation Productions is for Sony to have a real hands on approach with their IP’s, as compared to licensing out properties to various studios. Sony believes that with their large library of games, they have the upper in developing a blockbuster success than competitors like Ubisoft and Activision Blizzard. Also, Sony hopes that this investment will also serve as an alternate experience for fans to enjoy their favorite game series, when a new installment or sequel is not immediately available.

Shawn Layden is set to speak further on Playstation’s Worldwide Studios progression, tomorrow, at the Collision Conference in Toronto, Canada. For those interested in reading the full announcement regarding Playstation Productions, they can head over to the Hollywood Reporter.
