Pokémon Bank Sun & Moon Update Overview

After waiting so long for Pokémon Bank to come out during X & Y Pokémon fans found themselves waiting again for Pokémon Bank to get Sun & Moon support. The wait is finally over and we can finally get our hands on all our old Pokémon. That’s not all, as Poké Transporter has also been updated to support the Virtual Console releases Pokémon Red, Blue, and Yellow.

These updates mean a lot old unobtainable abilities, moves, and Pokémon become available again. While it’s great to get a lot of hazard setters like Ferrothorn, Landorus-T, and Hippowdon the main draw is being able to transfer Pokémon from Red, Blue and Yellow.

Here’s are some things one can and can’t do with this new update:

  • Non-Alolan forms can now be obtained. Pokémon like Raichu and Marowak could only be obtained as their new forms. But now you can transfer the old versions.
  • Evolving Non-Alolan Pokémon from old games like Pikachu or Cubone will still turn them into the Alolan Form.
  • Transferring old Pokémon that had their abilities changed for Sun and Moon will be updated with their new abilities. This means Gengar can’t get Levitate back.
  • Pokémon from Red, Blue, and Yellow always get hidden abilities. This makes it easier to obtain the Legendary Birds and Mewtwo with hidden abilities.
  • A Mew that has been obtained through the Mew Glitch can’t transfer over.
  • Pokémon from Red, Blue, and Yellow can be shiny
  • Pokémon from Red, Blue, and Yellow receive random genders.
  • Pokémon like Golbat and Poliwhirl that received new evolutions in later games are considered illegal if they evolve in Sun and Moon. This means a Crobat evolved from a Generation 1 Golbat can’t be traded or used in Battle Spot
  • Pokémon from Red, Blue, and Yellow that are taught new moves they couldn’t learn before are considered illegal
  • Pokémon from Red, Blue, and Yellow get their EVs reset and they get at least 3 perfect IVs
  • Pokémon from Red, Blue, and Yellow will gain a Nature in Sun and Moon. The nature is determined by your Pokémon’s EXP
  • Missingno can’t be transferred. Trying to transfer it will actually glitch your box and shuffle the names of your Pokémon around
  • Glitch Pokémon over level 100 get their level reduced to 100 when they  transfer over
  • Pokémon found in Sun and Moon via Island scan will consider transferred hidden ability versions illegal

Hope this is useful to players. Don’t forget to get the new Z-Crystal, Mewium-Z!
