Super Mario Bros. 35th Anniversary Direct Streamed

Nintendo recently updated their official Youtube channel with a Super Mario Bros. 35th Anniversary Direct. The latest Nintendo Direct revealed several games and some products that will be released to celebrate the 35th anniversary for the franchise.

First, Nintendo revealed that they will be releasing a special new version of the Game & Watch. For those who are not aware, the original Game & Watch was a series of handheld LCD devices that featured minigames. Starting in 1980, Nintendo released several standalone Game & Watch games until the following year. Unlike the previous releases, this version of the Game & Watch will feature a full color LCD screen and will feature both the original Super Mario Bros. as well as its’ sequel. Additionally, the device will feature an updated version of Game & Watch: Ball. Game & Watch Super Mario Bros. will be released this November.

Next, Nintendo revealed that they will be releasing Super Mario 3D World on the Nintendo Switch. The game was originally released for Wii U in 2013. This version of the game will feature some kind of new content, although it is unknown exactly what it will entail. Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury will be released on February 12, 2021.

Thirdly, Nintendo revealed that a battle royale styled Mario game will be released exclusively for Nintendo Switch Online Subscribers. Similar to Tetris 99, players will be playing the original Super Mario Bros. with the ability to power up and stop other players from progressing. Super Mario 35 will be released on October 1 and will be playable until March 31, 2021.

Fourthly, Nintendo revealed that they will be releasing a spin-off title in the Mario Kart series. Unlike the standard Mario Kart games, this game will feature real life toys that seems to be controlled by the Nintendo Switch. Not much is known about this title however, the game itself will be a free title. Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit will be released on October 16.

Fifthly, Nintendo revealed some of the other events that will be periodically held throughout the course of the 35th anniversary celebration. Those who are interested can complete Super Mario themed missions via My Nintendo and people can receive rewards such as a pin set. A new event will also launch on for the Mario Kart Tour mobile app on September 8. The event will bring Mario and Donkey Kong Junior from the original Super Mario Kart SNES game. New Mario themed merchandise such as shirts, hats, etc will also be released. A new Ninji Speedrun course will also be available for Super Mario Maker 2. Later this year, a Nintendo Vs Challenge Cup will be held for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate featuring the various Super Mario characters. Starting next year in January, a new Splatfest will be held for Splatoon 2. Splatfest themed Keychains will also be available during the event for My Nintendo members. Super Mario themed items will be available in Animal Crossing New Horizons in March 2021. 

Sixth, Nintendo revealed that the SNES Super Mario All Stars Collection is available now on the Super NES – Nintendo Switch Online service. For those who are not aware, the Super Mario All Stars Collection was a collection of updated ports of some of the older Super Mario titles. The game includes updated versions of the original Super Mario, Super Mario Bros. 2, and Super Mario Bros. 3. The game also featured the first international commercial release of the Japanese Super Mario Bros. 2 under the name Super Mario Bros. The Lost Levels. 

Lastly, Nintendo revealed that they will be releasing a new compilation of the main 3D Mario console games (Outside of Super Mario Galaxy 2). The collection will include Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy. The game will also feature a Music Player Mode, where players can listen to their favorite Mario tunes. The Super Mario 3D All Stars collection will be released as a physical limited release on September 18. The game will also be available digitally until the end of March 2021.
