IDW Publishing has announced that they will be publishing an ongoing comic series based on Beast Wars: Transformers in 2021. This series will be part of the 25th anniversary for the franchise. For those who are not aware, Beast Wars: Transformers was the follow-up animated series to The Transformers aka Transformers: Generation One. The series ran from 1996 to 1999, and features the descendants of the Transformers known as the Maximals and Predacons, who get sent to prehistoric earth thanks to a time/ space phenomenon. Because of this their war took place chronologically before the events of The Transformers.
Now, Erik Burnham will be working as a writer for the series simply titled, “Transformers: Beast Wars,” and Josh Burcham will be brought on as the illustrator. Whereas, the series will feature new characters and will also include fan favorites such as Optimus Primal and Rattrap. The series will feature the Maximals as they try and stop the Predacons from using a stolen time machine.
IDW Publishing provided a short description for the series.
The Transformers: Beast Wars comic series will welcome fans to a future Cybertron populated by scientific-minded Maximals and action-oriented Predacons. When the successor to the Megatron name steals a golden disk and a ship capable of traveling through time, only Optimus Primal and a team of Maximals — Rattrap, Rhinox, Cheetor, and a new character Nyx — can stop them.
This is not the first time the Beast Wars has been featured in comics as IDW previously released two miniseries based on the franchise. The first miniseries was titled, “Beast Wars: The Gathering” was released in 2006. The sequel miniseries titled, “Beast Wars: The Ascending,” was released in 2007. Both series served as a follow-up to the original animated series, however it featured many characters that were not seen in original animated series. Additionally, several Beast Wars characters also made cameo appearances throughout the course of the last IDW Transformers comic run before the reboot in 2019.
Transformers: Beast Wars #1 will feature multiple cover variants. Some of the variants include covers by Josh Burcham (Cover A), Fico Ossio (Cover B), along with two Retailer Incentive editions by Dan Schoening and Nick Brokenshire.
