Variety has reported that Alcon Television Group will be teaming up with Adult Swim and Crunchyroll to produce/ distribute an anime series that is inspired by “Blade Runner 2049.”
The series will be titled, “Blade Runner- Black Lotus,” which is stated to consist of 13 half-hour episodes. Although details about the project are scarce at this time, it is said that series will be set in the year 2032 and will feature appearances of characters seen within the Blade Runner universe.
Jason DeMarco, SVP director of Adult Swim, had this to say about the project.
“I first saw ‘Blade Runner’ in 1982, at age 11,” said Jason DeMarco, SVP and creative director of Adult Swim on-air. “It has remained one of the defining films of my life. To be able to explore more of this universe, with the incredible talent we have on board, is a dream come true.”
Sae Whan Song, the head business developer of Crunchyroll also had some thoughts on the project.
“’Blade Runner’ is a seminal work, and its influence permeates the genre,” said Sae Whan Song, head of business development for Crunchyroll. “Adult Swim shares our excitement to bring this new series to fans, and we’re looking forward to building on this franchise together.”
The confirmed staff includes:
- Shinji Aramaki, Kenji Kamiyama: Episode Directors
- Shinichiro Watanabe: Creative Producer
- Sola Digital Arts: Production
It is stated that Adult Swim will own the wordwide rights to the English dub versions of the series, excluding Asia. The English Dub is stated to air on Toonami and Crunchyroll will own the worldwide streaming rights for the series.
