New Akira Anime Project & 4K Akira Film Remaster Announced

Yesterday, Katsuhiro Otomo announced at Anime Expo 2019 that a new anime project based on his original Akira manga is in the works. The series is stated to integrate the entirety of the manga’s story. Additionally a 4K remaster of the 1988 film will be released in Japan in April 24, 2020. The 4K remaster will also be released in the United States.

Bandai Namco also lisred the trailer that was shown at Anime Expo 2019.

Clandestine army activities threaten the war torn city of Neo-Tokyo when a mysterious being with powerful psychic abilities escapes his prison and inadvertently draws a violent motorcycle gang into a heinous web of experimentation. As a result, a biker with a twisted mind embarks on a path of war, seeking revenge against a society what once called him weak.

The Akira manga series made its debut in the Weekly Young Magazine on December 6, 1982 and ran until June 11, 1990. The animated film debuted in Japanese theaters on July 16, 1988 and also had a limited theatrical release in North America on December 25, 1989.
